Therapeutic Exercise for Spinal Pathologies

Course Description
This course is focused on therapeutic exercises for strengthing the muscles that support the spine and pelvis. Specifically, this course will cover exercise programs in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, scoliosis, disc related problems, spondylolisthesis, spondylosis, and facet joint issues. Over 50 exercises will be taught along with modifications and props to improve spinal alignment and stability. The therapeutic exercises that will taught are based on the princples of Pilates and Yoga.
The live lecture offers 6 credit hours and the home study course offers another 6 credit hours. The home study course is titled Scapular, Pelvic and Lumbar Stabilization and comes free with this program. The home study course is distributed at the seminar.
Participants are encouraged to bring a stability ball (55 cm, 65cm or 75 cm), foam roller (36”x 6” preferred), theraband, exercise mat or towel and dress comfortably. Participants do not have to exercise to receive credit for the course.
The Pilates Principles
- Applying the concept of centering to joints and movement patterns.
- Understanding balanced muscle development emphasizing the muscles that support the spine.
- Learning to use the breath to improve stability, concentration and movement.
Osteoporosis: Strengthening and Lengthening the Spine
- Learn exercises for strengthening bone and exercise guidelines for fracture prevention.
- Review current exercise guidelines for osteoporosis and osteopenia.
- Strengthening the muscles of the upper back to improve posture and reduce pain.
- Specific exercises for improving standing balance and coordination to aid in fall reduction.
- Pilates exercises for kyphotic and lordotic postures.
- Using foam rollers and exercise straps to improve proprioception.
Yoga and Pilates for Scoliosis
- Structural versus functional scoliosis - the effect on muscle balance and posture.
- Using Yoga postures to develop structural alignment creating a more normal symmetrical alignment.
- Pilates techniques to improve spinal muscle strength and balance.
- Using foam rollers for body awareness, muscle re-education, and dynamic strengthening.
Exercise Therapy for Management of Low Back Pain
- Specific exercises to strengthen the back extensor and abdominal musculature.
- Stretching techniques for those with inflexibility of the lumbar spine, hamstrings and hip flexor muscles.
- Guidelines for those with disc herniation, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis and facet joint irritation.
- Therapeutic Yoga poses to reduce pain and improve posture.
- Pilates for core training to increase segmental spinal stabilization.
- Foam roller techniques for reducing myofascial pain.
Treating Lumbo-Pelvic Instability
- Teaching patients pelvic awareness. Neutral vs imprint pelvic alignment.
- Techniques for engagement of Transversus Abdominis - a key lumbo-pelvic stabilizer.
- Using resistant bands and stability ball in upper and lower extremity stabilization and mobilization.
- Designing a home core strengthening program for patients to maintain lumbo-pelvic stability.

Course Agenda
8:00 A.M.–8:25A.M. REGISTRATION
8:30 A.M.–3:30 P.M. The course begins at 8:30 A.M. and adjourns at 3:30 P.M. Lunch (on own) is from 11:30 A.M. - 12:20 P.M. Certificates are distributed upon course completion. Full attendance required and ALL participants must complete a course evaluation.
Course Instructor
Ginger Schirmer, PhD, RD, RYT , obtained her Masters of Science in Exercise Science from Georgia State University and her doctoral degree from Auburn University. Dr. Schirmer has been developing and presenting therapeutic exercise workshops to physical therapy and occupational therapy professionals for over seven years. She is trained and certified in yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi. Dr. Schirmer has undergone mat and equipment certification training in Pilates and has extensive knowledge in exercise therapy. She is Yoga certified in compliance with the Yoga Alliance, and her Tai Chi training is specialized in the field of Diabetes. Dr. Schirmer has currently completed level 1 training in Gyrokinesis and finishing level 1 training in Gyrotonics.
