Trunk to Toes: Pilates for Rehabilitation of Lower Quadrant

Course Description
This course is focused on therapeutic exercises for the lower quadrant. The exercises will be based on The Pilates Method, developed by Joseph Pilates. Participants will learn Pilates based exercises to use for any lower extremity diagnosis and rehabilitation. Props, including a foam roller, a stability ball, mini balls, and resistant bands, will be used to facilitate and to challenge the movements. Over 50 exercises with modifications, variations, and progressions will be introduced using these props.
The live lecture offers 6 credit hours and the home study course offers another 6 credit hours. The home study course is titled Spinal, Pelvic, and Scapular Stabilization and comes free with this program. The home study course materials are distributed at the seminar. Participants recieve a 6 hour certificate at the end of the seminar and will receive the 6 hour home study certificate when the test/evaluation is completed.
It is suggested (not mandatory)to bring a stability ball, foam roller, exercise mat or towel and dress comfortably. It is not mandatory to exercise to recieve credit. Suggested foam roller size is 36"x6" and the stability ball is either a 55 cm or 65 cm ball depending on height.

The Foundation of Foot/Ankle Complex
- Specific exercises for improving standing balance and coordination.
- Using miniballs and resistant bands to increase intrinsic foot strength.
- Pilates exercises that focus on balance and coordination.
- Pilates exercises for increasing mobility through foot/ankle joints.
- Using resistant bands and exercise straps to improve proprioception.
Training to maximize hip mobility and stability
- Increasing hip mobility using resistant bands and exercise straps.
- Strengthening the neutralizers of the hip for greater stability.
- Learn how to dissociate the hip mobility from pelvic mobility.
- Current research regarding hip osteoarthritis.
- Creating hip congruency.
The Power of the Pelvis
- Pilates exercises for SI dysfunction, post-natal issues, pelvic obliquity.
- Identify the pelvic floor muscles.
- Learn to contract and relax the pelvic floor using mini balls and imagery.
- Pelvic integration with functional movement.
Upper Quadrant Alignment and Integration
- Improve alignment of thorax, shoulder complex, neck, and head.
- Therapeutic exercises to increase scapular stability and mobility.
- Integrating upper and lower quadrants using resistant bands.
Gait, Balance, and Whole Body Integration
- Props to aid in balance training (e.g stability ball, foam roller).
- LE lengthening and strengthening for efficient, functional movement.
- The importance of rotation for normal gait.
- Facilitating whole body integration using a stability ball, resistant band, and foam roller.

Course Agenda
8:00 A.M.–8:25A.M. REGISTRATION
8:30 A.M.–3:30 P.M. The course begins at 8:30 A.M. and adjourns at 3:30 P.M. Lunch (on own) is from 11:30 A.M. - 12:20 P.M. Certificates are distributed upon course completion. Full attendance required and ALL participants must complete a course evaluation.
Course Instructor
Jona Bollinger, MPT, Certified Pilates Instructor, graduated in 1996 from Northwestern University with a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy. Jona started her career in sports medicine and orthopedic physical therapy, where she began to integrate manual therapy skills with biomechanical analysis of running and cycling. As a life-long athlete, she personally experiences a whole-body connection. In this vain, Jona has trained in pilates for 10 years, receiving a teaching certificate from Polestar Pilates in 2006 and from Balanced Body in 2009, and holds a national certification with The Pilates Method Alliance. Jona currently lives in western Colorado, where she integrates pilates and physical therapy to assist her clients and patients to better move through their days.
